Histrory of Crete

The history of Crete begins during the Neolithic era (6000 BC). However the development was at the Bronze Age. During 7th millenium BC Crete was in the period of the Minoan civilization, the oldest civilization in Europe and the first , in Europe, to build a palace. During that period were built the palaces of Knossos,  of Phaistos, of Mallia and of Zakros.
The same period Egypt was afraid of travelling in the sea. They was afraid of '' the endless blue'' . The Minoan boats was travelling and traded with all the countries of Mediterranean sea.
The influence from this travels on the Minoan civilization was great and that help them to grow up and be the first high-level civilization in Europe which even today everybody admires.
The Thera eruption in Santorini destroyed the Minoan civilization.
After this, Crete developed an Ancient Greece organization of City states.
Then Crete was sucessively part of Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman Empire, autonomous state and the modern state of Greece.

Mythology Crete

Everybody knows about Greek mythology. Most of them do not know that some of the most beautiful legends of Greek mythology have protagonists legendary figures of Crete. The Minotaur , the thread of Ariadne , Daedalus and Icarus , the abduction of Europa by Zeus, the bronze giant Talus are some examples.
Mythology is an important part of Crete.
Greek gods are a big part of it but also Minoan Civilization is part of Mythology in Crete.
There are many places in Crete which are connected to Mythology.
For the first part ( Greek gods ) is the place of Psychro cave, the as well known as the birth place of God Zeus and the Paximadia the birth place of the goddes Artemis and the god Apollo.
Faistos, Lake Voulismeni, island of Dia and lot of other places around Crete have a story to tell about the Greek gods.
For the second part ( Minoan Civilization) is the Labyrinthof the palace of Knossos. It is connected with the myth of Theseus and Minotaur. The famous story of Ikarus and Dedalous is also connected to Cretan Mythology. They were captive of King Minos and the made wings to escape.

Religion Crete

The church of Crete is an Orthodox church which is semi autonomous ( self - governing since late Ottoman times) under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinopole.
